SWOSU AAUW Tech Trek STEM Camp 2017, Awards & Recognition

On Saturday, the final day of camp, campers are recognized in front of friends, family and the public. The awards ceremony is a joyous occasion for all, especially the proud family members.

By now the campers have not only been exposed to so much exciting STEM, remarkable teachers and mentors, and other new topics, but they have also grown as individuals through exploring new hands-on activities, stretching their problem-solving, building self-confidence, and realizing their true potential through self-reflection as chronicled in their journals. Campers have also made many new friends, whom they will likely see throughout their high school and post-secondary careers.

Camp Director Lisa Appeddu, Ph.D., and Program Director
Cindi Albrightson "bookend" the 2017 camp counselors.

During the week-long stay on the SWOSU campus, no camper is ever left alone. Older peers, the camp counselors who three years prior were campers themselves, are with the girls throughout the week to encourage and help campers as needed. Camp staff and volunteers are also around.

Campers are eager to share parts of their experience.

and a member of Kiwanis Club of Weatherford. In blue on the

No matter how professional, dedicated and enthusiastic the camp staff is, the week-long event cannot happen without financial supporters. Thanks to all who made this unique opportunity possible through funding, field trips and often presentations. The campers, entering eighth grade in the fall, experienced:
  • Knowledge in STEM core classes
  • Social skills
  • Etiquette
  • Interview skills
  • Reflection
  • Professional women's mentoring
  • Career exploration
  • Communication
  • Diversity
  • Socializing
  • Cyber security
  • Forensics
  • Fun
  • Collaboration and much more!
