From Teens: Study Resources

Booker T. Washington Magnet School, Tulsa
Extreme applause for the Teen Advisory Board (TAB) at Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for not only finding these study resources but also for sharing them. TAB even allow online requests through which BTW students can request a peer tutor in a particular subject. How is that for feeling included?

In addition, the BTW TAB in 2014-15 created Big Sib, a peer mentoring program matching upperclassmen with freshmen, who meet during advisory period, similar to homeroom, during the school day.

Online Degree--New!

A game changer, a degree, not just classes, from a major university...

This is worth sharing with young people as well as adults.  In many jobs, a master's degree is essential.  Imagine the near future if higher-level degrees such as this can be completed online at a significant saving.  Listen to the short segment below.

Georgia Tech to offer online master's degree at bargain price
Georgia Tech announced Tuesday that it will offer an online master's degree in computer science for less than $7,000.  Robert Frank, senior vice president and publisher of the Princeton Review joins "CBS This Morning: Saturday."

College Planning and Search Tool

Photo:  http://planet.vectorworks.net/
On the OSDE website, we found this College Board tool , Big Future, featuring planning, career choices, finding a college, financial aid, college comparisons and many other topics in one place.  Students can choose to begin the step-by-step planning process as early as eighth grade and below, and undocumented students are addressed, too.

New College Planning Resource for Students

Posted by sde on Mar 23, 2012

Education Week blogger Caralee Adams wrote this week about BigFuture -- a free, new resource on College Board's website aimed at engaging students in the college planning and search process.

BigFuture has information on finding colleges, paying for education and making a college plan, and it tailors an action plan to student's individual interests. Students can search for schools by location, major, sports, diversity and cost. College profile information of nearly 4,000 institutions is collected by College Board in its Annual Survey of Colleges. Adams notes that the price includes tuition and fees but not room and board.

Information on the site is student-friendly, with interactive graphics, videos of other students reporting how they decided on their school, and short "nugget-sized tips."

The content is designed for students as young as eighth grade and can be used throughout a student's high school career, Adams writes.

Students can get much of the information on BigFuture without signing up, but to create a plan or save work, they will need to create an account, Adams reports. Those with College Board accounts can use their existing user names and passwords."

Technology & Learning

At a recent Oklahoma Afterschool Network (OKAN) meeting at techJOYnT in Oklahoma City, attendees enjoyed some of the recent and on-order additions to the robotics there.  Summer interns, Ray's children, who inspired the foundation, and others demonstrated various robots and modules.  The techJOYnT concept consists of hands-on learning of applied math and science, critical thinking and teamwork mixed with fun.

Today's post is intended for information, not advertising. Postsecondary institutions and some secondary ones in Oklahoma have funding for similar technology and more, but not every Oklahoma child or teacher has access.  Ray Shaik, the founder and CEO, is developing additional curriculum for some robotics kits, which can be rented to schools.  Different robotics teach applied algebra, physics, geometry, trigonometry or more in addition to programming.

Learning, or in some cases, "recreating" with robotics could also be a shared activity for grown-ups, a parent and child, or a mentor and mentee.

Demonstrations:
  • Mini-power plant program with a module containing little houses and a photo-sensor to determine solar input and conventional energy input
  • Hydrogen car module with software
  • Sphero - Spherical robots of various colors, lighted when active, could be directed to defend a target or given another mission and controlled by cell phones or tablet
  • AR.Drone - Quadcopter, the hovering “drone," equipped with four horizontal propellers, a camera and controlled by a cell phone or tablet
  • Armbot, a bobotic arm attached to a board with angles indicated.  Students applied programming to "instruct" the components of the arm to move into angles.
  • Robotic basketball launcher (on loan)
  • A video of the humanoid robot on order (Aldebaran NAO Robot below)

Your Mentee's Journey Map

This is a clever tool for talking to your mentee about his or her future.  Go to the link since it is interactive.

Imagine creating your own mentee's journey path with areas to fill in as your mentee ages.

Personal journeys will probably look different, but exploration, goal-setting and achievement matter.

This could be recreated digitally, on paper or on a whiteboard with photo documentation.

Update and review regularly!
